COVID-19

COVID-19 where CO stands for corona, VI stands for virus, ‘D’ stands for disease is a disease caused by a newly found strain of the coronavirus family which also hosted other diseases such as the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and common cold. COVID-19 is now declared as a global pandemic and Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) and the virus has now spread across many countries and territories worldwide.

Symptoms of COVID-19

Below are the symptoms seen in a COVID-19 patient:

  • High fever
  • Cough
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Pneumonia

As the symptoms are very similar to the flu (influenza) and common cold, testing for coronavirus is mandatory to confirm if someone has been affected by the COVID-19 disease.

How does it spread?

Commonly spreads through direct contact via sneezing or coughing or through contact with infected surfaces followed by touching the face.

Treatment

As of March 20, 2020, there is no available treatment for COVID-19 however getting early care from a healthcare provider is advised and less threatening. The vaccine for treating COVID-19 is in progress.

Precautions you should take

As many countries have observed or are observing a lockdown period to prevent the spread of coronavirus, it is of utmost importance to do our bit as humans and take some precautionary measures to protect ourselves and the vulnerable ones as well.

Below are some precautions that one should take in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic-

  • Stepping out of the house only for essentials and groceries and any medical issues and wearing mask and gloves everytime you step out of the house
  • Maintaining social distance of six feet (about two arm’s length) from others
  • Washing hands often especially if you are coming home from outside for groceries or essentials with antibacterial soap and water for 20 secs at least
  • Staying home if you are sick
  • Cleaning frequently touched surfaces and objects more often with a disinfectant
  • Covering nose and mouth with upper arm when sneezing or coughing
  • Call your healthcare professional early on if you are sick and have concerns about COVID-19

Some tips to reduce stress amid the pandemic

Do not neglect your mental health, the less talked about topic.

Below are some tips to combat stress:

  • Avoid constantly watching the news especially about COVID-19
  • Take a break from social media if it helps
  • Do something that sparks joy for example, cooking your favorite meal
  • Get on that project or hobby you have always pushed back due to other priorities (examples include painting, sketching, doodling, learning to bake etc.)
  • Stay connected with your close buddies through the cell phone
  • Get engrossed in your favorite activity be it yoga, dancing, meditation etc.

Know the latest facts and updates to stay informed on the COVID-19 global pandemic through trusted sources such as WHO, UNICEF and national health ministry advisories. Be alert about fake information that may circulate via online or in person.
